PT-141, scientifically known as Bremelanotide, is a synthetic peptide designed to treat sexual dysfunction and a lack of desire (libido) in both men and women.

Unlike traditional medications such as Viagra or Cialis (which act on the cardiovascular system by increasing peripheral blood flow), PT-141 acts directly on the central nervous system. It is derived from the peptide Melanotan II and works by activating melanocortin receptors (specifically MC4R) in the hypothalamus, the region of the brain that controls sexual motivation and desire.

Key features

Medical approval: The FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved its commercial version under the name Vyleesi for the treatment of hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in premenopausal women.

Use in men: Although its official approval focuses on women, it is frequently used in men who do not respond well to traditional vascular treatments or who suffer from a lack of libido of neurological or psychological origin.

Method of administration: It is generally administered via subcutaneous injection (into the fat of the abdomen or thigh) approximately 45 minutes to an hour before sexual activity. Nasal spray versions also exist, although the injectable route is the most common in research and clinical settings.
